A Brief History

The Stud was originally built in 1888 by Sir John Blundell Maple as part of his Childwickbury estate, he bred and raced Thoroughbreds and built Childwickbury Stud into a very successful horse breeding operation.

Another prominent racehorse owner, Jack Joel then bought the estate including the Stud in 1906. In 1940 his son Jim Joel took over the operation. He too became a successful racehorse owner and breeder and maintained the property until 1993 when the Stud was sold to the Marquesa de Moratella.

She also ran a successful horse breeding operation as well as being a successful racehorse owner. Mr & Mrs Flatt then took over ownership of the stud in 2011.

They have worked with Heritage and the Planners to continue the modernisation of the Stud for the next generation of winners.

Our facilities include:

230 acres of large post and rail paddocks which have been permanent grass since the mid 19th century.

• 35 broodmare stables
• 32 yearling stables
• Foaling unit equipped with CCTV
• 2 lunge rings and a covered horse walker
• 4 indoor loose barns and 5 all weather nursery paddocks.

We use Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons.

We are located just 50 miles south of Newmarket, making us an ideal location for walking in mares during the stud season. We are also only 27 miles from central London and 35 miles from Heathrow Airport.

We offer a bespoke service to owners of thoroughbred bloodstock, utilising the best veterinary and nutritional services available.

12 classic winners have been bred/raised at Childwickbury Stud including: SUNSTAR (2000 Guineas and Derby), JEST (1000 Guineas and Oaks), HUMORIST (Derby), ROYAL PALACE (2000 Guineas and Derby), FAIRY FOOTSTEPS (1000 Guineas) and TIN HORSE (French 2000 Guineas).
